By evening there is a band of tightness across your back, or a heaviness at the base of your skull. You blame the desk, or your age, or how you slept.
Fascia, the continuous tissue
Every muscle, organ, nerve and bone is wrapped in connective tissue called fascia. Fascia is built from three things: collagen, the fibrous protein that gives skin, tendon and bone their strength; water; and hyaluronan, a slippery substance that lets the layers of fascia slide over one another.
Hyaluronan is the same substance sold in face creams. Inside you, its job is lubrication, and it is the part that goes wrong first. I come back to it later in this article.
Fascia is one continuous tissue with no seams. Everything in you is connected to everything else through it.
A bedsheet makes the point: pull one corner and the whole thing moves. Your body works the same way. A tight chest can ache in your upper back. A locked hip can end up as a sore neck.
The place that hurts is often not the place that is stuck. It is the place doing the extra work.
Why the sliding stops
Between the dense layers of fascia sits a looser layer rich in hyaluronan. Sit for hours and the hyaluronan changes character. Its chains clump together, and it turns sticky where it was slippery. Scientists call this densification.
Nothing is torn. Densification is a change in a fluid, and fluids change back. Movement reverses it.
Water matters as much as movement, because hyaluronan does its work by holding water. A single gram of it can hold up to a thousand times its own weight in water, and it is that held water which keeps the layers wet enough to glide. Fascia short of water is fascia short of lubrication, so drinking well and moving well are one job rather than two. I have written separately about what the body actually needs to stay hydrated.
Fascia also reports to your brain
Fascia is thick with nerve endings. The thoracolumbar fascia — the broad diamond of tissue across the middle and lower back — carries more of them than almost anywhere else in the body, and those nerve endings send pain signals straight into the spinal cord.
The spinal cord is the thick bundle of nerves running from the base of your brain down through the inside of your spine. Every message the body sends travels up it to reach the brain, and the brain is where a message becomes a feeling. So a signal that starts in the fascia of your lower back arrives in your head a fraction of a second later, and what arrives is pain.
So the tissue that stiffens is also the tissue that reports. That is why a back can hurt badly when the scan shows nothing broken.
Fascia does more than wrap
In 1957 two Japanese researchers, Eiichi Fukuda and Iwao Yasuda, measured something odd in bone: put it under load, and it gives off a small electrical charge. Bone and fascia are built from the same collagen. Collagen is piezoelectric, the word for a material that turns squeeze and stretch into electricity. Every step you take and every posture you hold sends a charge through your fascia.
Your fascia is also a network of moving fluid, and moving fluid carries things. It conducts and transports as well as wraps, and it is the one tissue in direct contact with every muscle, every organ and every nerve you own. In March 2018 Dr. Neil Theise and a team at New York University described the interstitium — fluid-filled spaces threading through connective tissue everywhere in the body. Newspapers called it a newly discovered organ.
The body’s electrical system
Dr. Chris Motley, a chiropractor trained in Chinese medicine, calls fascia the body’s electrical system, and argues that trouble in one organ can register in another organ.
In 2002 Dr. Helene Langevin and her team at the University of Vermont mapped the acupuncture meridians — the channels Chinese medicine has charted for thousands of years — against the planes of connective tissue running through the body, and published the result in The Anatomical Record. The two lined up. Acupuncture had been describing fascia all along, in its own language, centuries before anyone could see it.
The oldest exercise manual on earth
In 1983 archaeologists opened a Han dynasty tomb at Zhangjiashan, sealed in 186 BCE. Inside, written on bamboo slips and laid in the tomb beside the man buried there, was the Yinshu — the Book of Pulling.
It lists around forty exercises, explains how to do each one, and sets out a daily and seasonal routine. It is the earliest systematic guide to therapeutic exercise known anywhere in the world.
Shaolin continued to carry the idea forward. Its best-known form is the Yi Jin Jing — the Muscle and Tendon Change Classic — a form of qigong, the Chinese discipline of slow movement joined to the breath.
The Yi Jin Jing is a set of twelve postures, each one entered slowly, held under steady effort, and released on the breath. Shaolin tradition credits it to Bodhidharma, the Indian monk who brought Zen to China, though the earliest surviving copy of the text dates to 1624. It is still taught: China’s sports administration published a standard version in 2003, and it is practiced across the country today.
Training, the Shaolin way
The Yi Jin Jing is foundation training for Shaolin monks, and what it builds in them is close to superhuman. They hold postures most people cannot get into. They absorb impacts that ought to injure them. They move in their sixties the way many people cannot move in their thirties.
That does not come from strength work. It comes from decades of exactly this kind of conditioning: slow, repeated, held under steady effort, and aimed at the connective tissue rather than the muscle. It is what they build everything else on top of.
Just ten minutes a day, to begin, is enough to open the hips and shoulders, and to give you a back that holds up through a long day at the desk, and a body that moves as well at nine at night as it did at nine in the morning.
What the trials show
A 2025 review in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research pooled sixteen randomized controlled trials covering 1,175 people with long-standing lower back pain. Qigong reduced pain significantly more than the comparison treatments, and the shorter courses did better than the longer ones.
The movements linked later in this article are qigong — the same work that outperformed the treatments it was tested against, for free, with no equipment, at home.
What happened when I tried these exercises
I am a senior citizen. My body carries more wear than most, and I have spent money on chiropractors for years.
I did not expect much from standing in my own home doing slow movements from an ancient Chinese text. What surprised me was how fast it worked. I noticed a change the same morning.
It did more for me than the appointments at the chiropractor. That is one woman’s experience and nothing more, but it is why I sat down to write this.
It is also why I keep practicing. At my age the stiffness comes back if I let too many days go by. Ten minutes buys the whole day.
What this means for how you move
Three rules follow from the science.
1. Go slow. Collagen yields to steady load. Hold a shape, breathe into it, and stay there.
2. Treat the anchor, not the ache. Years of leaning toward a screen shorten the front of the chest, and the upper back spends all day being pulled forward. Open the front and the back stops having to fight. This is why the chest work later in this article matters as much as anything you do for your spine.
3. Practice daily. Fascia re-forms around the shape you spend your day in, so ten minutes every day beats an hour on Sunday.
Where to begin
Start with a spinal roll-down. Chin to chest, unstack one bone at a time until you hang loose at the waist, pause for a breath, then stack back up slowly. Three of them.
Most people feel something the first time — a spreading warmth, more room in the chest, a head that sits easier on the neck.
Pick one area and work it every day for at least two weeks. Then take notice of any changes you feel.

The same slow, unhurried attention runs through the Shaolin tradition itself, and through the breathing practices of India, which arrive at the same place by a different road.
The Yinshu went into the ground in 186 BCE beside the man who owned it, and stayed there for more than two thousand years. Nobody knows who wrote it. Whoever did had already worked out that a body needs drawing out the way a field needs turning. We can see why now. The instructions have barely changed.
